Welcome

Welcome to the Clare White Gallery – the primary outlet for the work of acclaimed St Ives water colourist Clare White (1903 -1997). Please explore this website to find out more about the artist’s life and work; view the original paintings and limited edition prints we have for sale; and find out about exhibitions we have planned in galleries and at art shows around the country. Our aim is to share our passion and appreciation for White’s characterful and accomplished work and champion her place in English art history and in the 21st century art market.

White visits Hepworth’s home town

A new exhibition of Clare White’s paintings will open at the Orangery in Wakefield next week. The solo show celebrates the friendship of Clare White with Wakefield’s most famous daughter, Barbara Hepworth. White and Hepworth lived and worked alongside one another in the stimulating British art colony of St Ives from 1949 onwards. Hepworth became one of the world’s leading lights in the abstract modern art movement while White travelled the world, painted everywhere she went and played an incredibly active role in all aspects of the St Ives art community. Cornish art historian Marion Whybrow once recorded a conversation between the two:

Clare: “Look at all the famous work you have produced while I have only done little things.”

Barbara: “Yes but you have lived!”

Clare: How true. But I hope still to produce things which, though small, may live after me and generate a little happiness.”

The ‘happiness’ exhibition runs Monday January 16th until Wednesday January 28th, open Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm. The Orangery, Back Lane, Wakefield, WF1 2TG, 01924 215 550, http://www.the-orangery.uk.net
