Grand National Fever!
Will you be having a flutter this weekend as the biggest race over jumps takes place? This seems like a good time to take a closer look at Judy Joel’s wonderful ‘The Old Stand, Ascot’ watercolour.
Judy is the secretary of the Association of British Naive Artists and is renowned form her amazingly detailed paintings of people enjoying life with friends and family.
Judy painted throughout the night – one of her favourite times for working – for several days to complete this image of Ascot. Her working process involves painting tiny figures ‘nude’ before returning late to clothe them. If you look very closely at the hundreds of mini-people in this picture, you might just spot a few ‘naked’ race fans who escaped her attention in one of the VIP boxes. What ungentlemanly behaviour!
